The first thing in marketing, is to always do your research. Do not create a product, until you understand your demographic and know what they want. A push strategy is no longer very effective. A push strategy is basically creating a product and then trying to push that product onto the customer instead of trying to figure out what the customer wants.
In the day and age, push marketing no longer works. You have to do your research beforehand. There are many ways to do research, one of most simplest ways is to do surveys. Another way might be to find a control group and test your products on them. The results are never guaranteed to match up with real sales numbers but they can give you a general estimation of how well a product will do. After you understand what it is your demographic wants, be sure to do research on the spending habits of your demographic. Just because it is a product that can add value for your customer doesn't mean your customer will be willing to pay the amount you require to make a reasonable profit off the product.
It is also important to realize your competition and how your promotional marketing and the product itself sets you apart from them. Price competition is never health for sellers, this is why a lot of them compete on marketing instead of price. You need to be able to market your product in a way that people will view it as different and not simply just as different but as better. A better product means the customer will appreciate it more and it will sell better assuming the price is reasonable. In order for a promotional marketing to truly succeed, you have to do the research and have the finances under control.
